Legend of the Death of Prince Oleg, 912

Legend of the Death of Prince Oleg, 912

Oleg was a pagan who, according to legend, sought to discover his future from a Slavic shaman. He is told his horse will cause his death, a believable fate since, for example, falling off a panicked horse in a battle could result in serious injury or death. Oleg ordered his horse taken away. Years later, Oleg remembers the prophecy and learns the horse has died. He goes to its bones and, mocking the shaman about his prediction, kicks its skull. This provokes a poisonous snake under the skull to bite him, and Oleg dies.
