Yaroslav the Wise (1019) and Anna Yaroslavna (1051)

Yaroslav the Wise (1019) and Anna Yaroslavna (1051)

After a civil war among familiy members, Yaroslav consolidated power in 1019. He began codifying Kievan law in his Pravda, which later would develop into the Rus Pravda, the law used by Kiev and other Rus states. (Pravda can mean truth but here means law or justice.) He also completed Saint Sofyi ("Sofia") Cathedral in Kiev.

His daughter Anna was well educated and literate. She was sent to France to marry King Henri I (1051) and reputedly was more intelligent and cultured than the illiterate French king. Her oldest son became King Phillippe I of France. This contact between Rus and distant France did not, however, result in any lasting ties, trade, or alliances between the two regions.
