Murder of Grand Prince Mikhail, 1318

Murder of Grand Prince Mikhail, 1318

The Mongol Empire broke up a few decades after the death of Genghis Khan, with the northwestern Ulus Jochi region (to the Russians, the Kipchak Khanate or, in particular, the Golden Horde) becoming its own state. As with the Mongol Empire, the Golden Horde demanded tribute from its subject lands. In this drawing, Grand Prince Mikhail of Vladimir, summoned to the Golden Horde, is being executed for suspected disloyalty and withholding of tribute.
